Safari Supper 2010

St Matthew’s enjoys a close relationship with the ecumenical churches of the city centre and take part in many joint events throughout the year. Each year the city centre churches hold a Safari Supper. No lions or tigers in the city centre, but we enjoy a course of a meal in each church, along with saying prayers for unity. This year the evening began with drinks and starters at St Matthew’s. Each church agreed to share with the others their favourite Biblical passage. St Matthew’s choice was John 4: 4 - 26, Fr Simon explaining why. Afterwards prayers were said and we sang the hymn ‘Love divine’ before going into the Hall to enjoy a glass on wine and a selection of starters!

From St Matthew’s we went to Central URC for the main course. The congregation had almost unanimously come to the conclusion that their favourite Biblical passage was Psalm 146, the Psalms for many people having a special place in their Christian life. Having sung an African chant, we all adjourned to the Hall for Coronation Chicken with salad.

The next stop was next door to Victoria Hall Methodist church. Their favourite Biblical passage was Luke 24: 13 - 35 and underlined the importance of the Eucharist for all Christians. Having sung some verses of a Eucharistic hymn, we adjourned to their cafe area for a selection of desserts.

Our final port of call was St Marie’s RC cathedral. The Biblical passage chosen was John 20: 1 - 18. Having sung a hymn, Fr Solomon delighted all present by singing and African chant, accompanied with his drum. Coffee, chocolates and liqueurs were then served in the Hall. It was a marvellous evening and enabled us all to worship together and to get to know each other. More was shared than just a meal!
